Rick L. Holloway – Welcome Remarks
Dear Brethren and Friends,
Thank you for visiting the website of the Grand Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Idaho!
It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I welcome you to our Masonic community. As your Grand Master for the 2024-2025 term, I am delighted to share our journey and endeavors with you. I have been fortunate to meet Masons from all over the United States, Canada, Brazil, the Philippines, and Australia, and have seen these men demonstrate the principles of Freemasonry regardless of their religious, ethnic, or cultural background. As a Freemason, you will always have a friend wherever you travel, especially here in Idaho, we hope are soon one of our friends.
There are 45 active lodges in Idaho, many of which are in the same buildings they have occupied for over a century. Our members include farmers, ranchers, businessmen, judges, former governors, real estate brokers, teachers, carpenters, welders, truck drivers, and professionals from various other fields. All come together to share a common philosophy and a fervent desire to make the world a better place through kindness and respect for others.
The Grand Lodge of Idaho and 23 of our lodges, of which 14 still exist, are older than the State of Idaho itself. The Grand Lodge was formed on December 17, 1867, when representatives of five lodges in Idaho (originally chartered by the Grand Lodge of Oregon) met in Idaho City. These lodges were Idaho #1 in Idaho City, Boise #2 in Boise, Placer #3 in Placerville, Pioneer #4 in Pioneerville, and Owyhee #5 in Silver City. War Eagle Lodge, also in Silver City, was Under Dispensation at the time and was later chartered as War Eagle #6.
While Pioneer #4 subsequently closed, the rest of these lodges are still in existence. Owyhee #5 and War Eagle #6 merged in 1881 to form Silver City #13. The jewels worn by the officers of Silver City #13 are made of silver mined in Silver City and inscribed with “War Eagle No. 6, Silver City, IT,” with “IT” referring to the Idaho Territory, as Idaho didn’t become a state until 1890.
This year, my theme is “Keeping our passions within due bounds toward all mankind.” This timeless principle resonates across all religions and philosophies, emphasizing the importance of controlling our emotions to align ourselves with our spiritual aspirations, enhance our interpersonal relationships, and lead a balanced and virtuous life. As Idaho Masons, we are committed to embodying this virtue in our daily actions, fostering a harmonious and supportive environment for all. Together, we will strive to uphold the values of Freemasonry, working towards the betterment of ourselves, our communities, and mankind. Let us embrace this journey with open hearts and minds, supporting one another and sharing the light of Masonry. May peace, health, and joy be yours throughout the year!
Fraternally,
Rick L. Holloway
Most Worshipful Grand Master
